Aaron’s Birth Story–It’s long!

To be honest… it’s hard to know where to begin this story, the depth of which I still have not fully processed...although one thing is for sure – as I write this my precious son has a full belly and is asleep on me – I LOVE IT!

307436_10152534947675034_1909134744_n

Birth is one of those things that caused me to trust even great in God and His timing!  I had NO idea what to expect, what a contraction felt like, how short/long labor would last, how painful contractions really are… and most of all, when it would all begin!!  {this last part was hard for me… I like to think I control the timing on things in my life…}

A few weeks before was I thought was my due date all along, I found out that it was actually 5 days later!  This was somewhat of a relief and somewhat discouraging because my mom had already bought her flight and we both wanted her to have as much time with Aaron as possible… knowing that the likelihood that he would be late was high.  However, the time that we did get to spend just the two of us was wonderful, refreshing, and relaxing! 734313_10152483569860034_2070257507_n

Aaron’s due date – Feb 4th – came and went fairly uneventfully.  My doctor did have me go to a stress test that day, as is routine here, and I found out that I was dilated 2 cm and having contractions every 4-5 min apart… WHO KNEW!  I seriously couldn’t feel them, even when I tried.  But this was encouraging to me, so mom and I did even more walking to try and get things going… it must have helped a little because by my next stress test on Thursday I was 3 cm and contracting every 2-3 min… but still couldn’t feel anything!  This was both encouraging and discouraging. Progress was good.  But if it was that much, why hadn’t I met my son yet?!?! So… we walked even more!

With the threat of snow upon us, my dad bought us a hotel room about a mile away from the hospital…I was hoping this was necessary and knew that I could go from thinking we didn’t need it, to being really glad we were that close at any point.  However, Aaron must not like the cold very much because when we left on Sunday and came back home (about 30-40 min from the hospital we had chosen) it still didn’t seem like he was going to grace us with his presence any time soon!

72903_10152512496185034_1815515508_n

When we got home, the big chore of trying to shovel out our driveway was in front of us!

485332_10152515945980034_1582600165_n

I wanted to help so bad, maybe it would start things up, but both my mom and Mike were very insistent that I go inside and help by making Hot Chocolate and lunch!  I was not allowed to risk injuring my back!  I pushed back for a little while, but eventually conceded...:)

4 PM, Sunday February 10th - When the shoveling was done, I was afraid to hope, but thought I was finally starting to feel those contractions I had supposedly been having. So, I laid down to rest (if it was real I knew I would need to rest), and start timing.  I did not alert my mom or Mike right away and tried to seem “normal”… still afraid to hope… but felt things getting stronger and about 2-3 min apart.  Eventually unable to hide it, my mom caught a look of pain on my face.

6 PM - So, the rushing around the house to gather everything, wait for the pizza we had already ordered to be delivered to take to the hospital with us [it seemed to take forever!], and finally we were off.  Texts were sent on the drive, my sister called, but I couldn’t talk for very long, and the roads – bumpy from ALL the snow – were not pleasant!

6:30 ish – We arrived at the hospital, checked in, and found out I was 6 cm!  At this point I’m thinking, man this hurts, but I already half way.   This labor is going to be as easy as the pregnancy, praise God!   My doctor arrived shortly later and said I was about 8 cm – YES!  We did some walking around, and my water broke! [or so I thought… it ended up just being a
“high leak” – which I had never heard of, but I guess it’s possible for your water to spring a leak instead of break fully.

So, we walked a little more.  I then sat on the bed for a little bit with dim lights and piano music… just breathing and praying.  This was one of the most “surreal” parts of it all. It was so peaceful.

9:30 PM – The nurses encouraged me to get out of the bed and stand leaning against the bed to move things along. [This was part of why we chose this hospital… the nurses were very much like midwives… yet we’re still in a hospital should anything go wrong]  With this slight change in position the urge to start pushing began… my doctor checked me again and I was already 10 cm.  So, she broke my water the rest of the way and we started pushing!  Mike and my mom had both encouraged me that because the first stage progressed so fast that pushing would probably be easy too!

God had different plans!  The timing of the rest is a little blurry to me…

11:30 PM – Still pushing, the nurses were encouraging me to try different positions besides being on my back at about 80 degrees, but my back labor was so bad I was very stubborn and resisted. We did try a couple different positions, but nothing seemed to help move things along… and I was starting to get tired and pretty discouraged.  There were times when I would push and my doctor would be over reading the chart, which was very mentally discouraging, because obviously Aaron wasn’t getting close enough to coming that she needed to be there to catch him.

12:00 AM, February 11th – We all had to have a couple different conversations about the options before us.  It didn’t appear as if Aaron was going to be able to make the turn through my pelvis on his own… and because I had been pushing for 3 hours at this point I was getting more and more swollen which was decreasing the likelihood of him coming through.  My doctor thought part of the issue was that I was only having “big” contractions every 3rd contraction, that made me feel need to push… the rest I was breathing through. Her advice was a SMALL dose of Pitocin to try and make every contraction a “big one”.  This started to kick-in, and I was feeling the need to and pushing at every contraction but Aaron still wasn’t coming.

12:30 PM – I was faced with another decision, because although Aaron’s heartbeat and everything were fine… he needed to come out.  My body could not handle much more. A c-section was starting to be mentioned and part of me wanted to just opt for that.  Thank-God for Mike and my mom and their strength or I might have caved!  The other option was to try it with vacuum assistance… so that’s what we did!  The first time it didn’t work and my doctor had said they could only try 3 times, so the reality of a c-section was hitting me hard, but I was determined, after Mike and I prayed together, to not go there.

1:00 PM – 1:17 AM – This part is a blur, I just know I  pushed a couple more time without the vacuum and then one more time with it… and everyone was yelling at me to keep going. I felt the biggest burning sensation of my life that was telling me to do everything except push, but kept going… and before I knew it my baby was out and in my arms!  He was perfect and nursed almost right away… with a little coaching for mama from the nurse.

44282_10152517834065034_1922531895_n

The trama on my body, due to all the pushing, is pretty extensive. It took awhile for the doctor to finish doing what she needed to and for us to get ready to go to our room.

3:30 AM – We were ready to head to our room!  Mike wheeled Aaron there in his pram… while the nurse and my mom tried to help me up. My heart started racing and my hearing started going, so they sat me back on the bed… where I apparently passed-out on my mom [thankful again for her support, even when she doesn’t expect it…].  They decided wheeling me to my room was the best option.  We got there and settled in.  I didn’t get any sleep that night… going over the events in my head, nursing my son, and just starring at him were enough for me!

There is SO much I give praise to God for in this birth story!  I praise Him ultimately for His providence in this whole pregnancy... but specifically for the amazing support of my husband and mom! For His strength to labor and deliver naturally [without any pain meds… one of the biggest reasons Aaron was alert and able to nurse right away!].  For the wisdom to choose a hospital over a home birth…it ended up being a good thing for us {although I totally agree with home births!}   And now for my SUPER handsome son

…who has been such an easy baby so far!  (I’ve typed this whole thing in one setting… although I think he’s about to wake up!)

Wow – such a long story and I don’t feel like I gave a ton of details! Congrats and thanks for reading my processing, if you made it through the whole thing!

Love,

Baby Batista–12 Weeks!

Dear Baby,

You were 12 weeks old on Wednesday!  Here’s your 10 weeks, 2 days glamour shot: (to us you are already beautiful/handsome, but we might be a little biased : ) )

IMG-20120707-00713

What a rollercoaster of emotions life has been the past few weeks.  With the joyful news of your presences, began the mental change of turning into parents, a abundance of joy, and SO many blessings from friends (crib, changing table, dresser… and so many words of encouragement and prayers!)

Your daddy is very excited about your arrival too, and has already begun preparations to move his office so you can have your own room.   He’s even put together your bed already!  Although we still need to buy a mattress… (the people giving it to us have a toddler and are moving oversees for a couple years… so they needed to keep their mattress, just not the crib!)

Fall River-20120717-00741

Overall, we are both very grateful for the ease of your time with us so far.  I haven’t been sick at all, despite little bouts of heartburn, my weight changes more throughout the day, but overall I haven’t gain anything yet, and my belly is starting to show ever so slightly… and here’s the first pic of us together to prove it:

12 Weeks(Although one more symptom seems to be a rash on my ring finger whenever I wear my ring, so that’s why its not in on this pic… thanks to my sis for pointing that out!)

Other silly symptoms included: a lot of sneezing and feeling like I need to drink water like a fish!   My biggest craving has been Chipotle, but I craved that a lot before too : ).

Baby – all this to say we look forward to the day. Lord willing, we get to meet you, but we’re also treasuring every moment we have with you now!  Daddy loves to kiss you good-bye for the day already!

Our prayers for you have been big, yet simple… we pray for your health and protection… but mostly that you will grow-up loving Christ above all else and that He would use us in whatever ways He sees fit in your life!

We love you so much! XOXO

A Blog worth restarting Blogging :)

Pictures and videos are worth a thousand words, but I will add a few more after them…

We are SOO VERY excited and humbled that the Lord would allow this little life to begin!  The emotions are mixed, very much like a rollercoaster, from moments of complete joy –to- overwhelming thoughts about how –to-  be parents to absolute surrender, realizing the Lord has worked this miracle and could take it away just as quickly.  Life is so delicate and each one is such a miracle.. We are hoping and praying for a healthy pregnancy and healthy delivery!

And, I’m sure this exciting change will give me A LOT more to blog about in the near future! Sorry I have been absent for awhile… life has been normal and good! :)

Love,

Heidi (and baby : ) )

Life Lately…

It’s been too long since I have posted… as usual… for some reason I always feel the need to post pictures when I post.  It draws attention. Holds attention. And tells so many stories that words can not express.  I go though phases with taking pictures, which is probably why I go through blogging phases too.

That being said, here are a few pics from life lately…

Fall River-20120403-00497
My morning snuggle… she is becoming so precious to me!

Warmer weather = iced drinks!  One of my favorite parts about work, is how much my boss drinks coffee, because she always buys me something when she gets something.
This is a 1/2 lemonade + 1/2 Passion Tea + Raspberry Syrup = pure deliciousness!

Drive Home
And a bit of my drive home last night… what a beautiful sunset!  God is so creative!

Life has been full of ups and downs. [Mostly Ups].  Never ending laundry, dishes, and cleaning.  Yet in the midst of it all I have Peace.

God Is Good!

A Night With a Friend…

I know my blog has been greatly neglected lately… life has been good, just haven’t felt like I had much to blog about… although I know that if I actually started, it would have probably flowed out.

BUT Alas, I now have a couple things worth blogging about… some adventures I’ve recently been apart of, I guess you could say!

Last night, one of my friends had to be in Boston to receive an employee of the year award that she had won from work (CONGRATS Brit!)… so another friend and I decided to tag along and spend some time “out on the town”.  There wasn’t much open, as we were in the business district after 5 PM, but we were able to find an Au Bon Pain for dinner (I had received some Gift Cards, so we ate for free, lvoe it!) in a cute little food court in between two skyscrapers!

It was refreshing to walk around a small piece of the city, eat & have a good conversations, and do a little shopping too!

Here are the pics (all from my cell, sorry!)

Ready to explore!

My beautiful friend, I am SO blessed!

We had lots of fun, in a short period of time!  I’m very grateful for the opportunity to go!

More to come another day….

Our Christmas Tree!

It’s been awhile since I’ve blogged… life has been crazy with work Christmas Parties and a Big Job for Mike!  Some where in the mix we found time to buy a tree (I know, I know… but we felt it was the wisest decision for us at this point…)…

And this year we actually decorated it too! (Yes, last year we had a tree that sadly never got decorated!)  This is partially motivated by the fact that we’re having Christmas with our church at our house… gave us a little motivation!

And for those of you who haven’t seen out living room, this is a small glimpse!  This window faces main st. so everyone that drives by can see it!

Here are the pics from our endeavor!  My hubby was a huge help!

We had to buy more lights….several strands we not working, despite many electrical tools being used to try and salvage them : ).  (This was the issue that stopped us last year)

And FINALLY!

Lights On….And lights off, with presents!

We can’t WAIT for Christmas this year!  I’ve had SO much fun shopping for everything and trying to get things that will bless and encourage them!  Can’t wait to give it all away!

Merry Christmas!

A CRAZY Week… and one ahead…

Why does it always seem that the weeks leading up to a long vacation are so jam packed that it takes the first few days of the vacation to re-coop from them?

That’s the way I feel.

But I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

I’m tired, but refreshed.

Blessing those in your own church body is SO refreshing, yet physically exhausting…

Am I making sense?

My hubby has taken on a project that started out to be changing out a broiler, from oil to gas, and adding a hot water tank and has evolved into redoing 80% of the basement plumbing, moving the washer/dryer hook-ups and adding another set, building a wall behind those hook-ups so it looks nice, redoing a window, and lots of other things along the way just cuz the house is old.

And since he has taken it on, I get to work right along side him.  I praise God that I’m able to help him in this way… it enables him to focus on what he’s best at (designing, measuring, planning, and making it happen)… while I make sure he has food, water, coffee, tools, and a clean work area.

I love to see his heart as he works and how is mind is constantly going and making sure they have the best now and in the future.

We are looking forward to leaving for Iowa on Saturday though… to rest and relax…

My goals?

  1. Spend lots of time in the Word, Journaling, and Studying
  2. And read a good non-fiction book…. any suggestions?  I’m currently reading “The Feminine Appeal”  by Caroline Mahaney, SO good and SO timely in my life.
  3. Sleep in…
  4. Talk daily long walks… if the weather allows…
  5. Cook…
  6. Cuddle by the fire…

Trying to keep it simple, yet refreshing Spiritually, which I know I need more than just physical relaxation.

How are you spending your Thanksgiving?

Love,

H

A Blessed Weekend… and Life!

We had a wonderful Saturday at Martha’s Vineyard!  The weather was beautiful and the company was great!  The sites were cool, but unfortunately not really worth the full ferry price or even half (which is what we paid).

The boat ride was SO relaxing!

(Not in focus but I thought it was still a cool pic!)

We saw some cute sites!  Had good food and ice cream!

(Kinda looks like the lighthouse is on, huh?… kinda…)

We then had a wondering Sunday with our church family!  Heard a sermon on James 1:1… yes, a whole sermon on just the greeting!  I was VERY convicted because I tend to just glance over those parts. EVER word of the Bible is living and active and SO important to pay attention too!  We then spent some time a Colt State Park… it’s SO beautiful and becoming one of my favorite places!

Monday we did yard work and worked on finishing putting in a door at some friend’s house… then went to Bible Study!  We’re going through “Dust to Glory” by R.C. Sproul. WHOA! SO good!  Through this course I can tell my desire for the Word, studying and looking deeper, is going to greatly increase!  How timely!  God is so good to allow this!

How was your weekend!?  What is God showing you?

Love,

~H~

Women in the whole world!

What a GREAT surprise to have my sister come too!!  Deep down I was hoping she would come, but wasn’t sure until I went to pull away from picking my mom up and she appeared out of the crowd at the airport!  SOO fun!

We had SO much GOOD food, GOOD talks, GOOD weather… I am blessed!

They both had their REALLY nice cameras so, I didn’t feel the need to take many pics.  I’m sure they’ll be on facebook soon!

Learning….

You know those weeks where it seems like scripture is going in one eye and out the other…

Nothing seems to stick…

And then, for the Glory of God, one day it all seems to stick… that was this morning for me! I know it partly has to do with last week’s sermon being on…

Philippians 4: 8-9 “8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is [e]lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, [f]dwell on these things. 9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” (NASB)

Dwell or Meditate on these things, including LOTS of scripture! STOP letting things go in one eye and out the other.  I was convicted.  Praise God!

This morning I went back to…

Philippians 2:1-4 “1 Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any [a]affection and compassion, 2 make my joy complete [b]by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. 3 Do nothing [c]from [d]selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.” (NASB)

Unity…Humility…Joy.. Servanthood.   I reread my notes from several sermons Reverend Jeffery Costa (my pastor) did on this passage.  It’s SO deep. Unity is SO important in the church. Joy is foundational, true, God-centered, Gospel-based Joy!  Humility…compared to the GREATNESS of how much Christ CHOSE, WILLINGLY to humble himself…is…I can’t find the words.  Servanthood is (to paraphrase Jeff) “Giving out of the treasure (the joy of our salvation) we have been given, when we feel like we have nothing left to give!”

These sermons were SO deeply convicting and encouraging…It was a HUGE blessing to be able to go back over them now, several months later.   This is why it’s SO important to take notes, stay meditating on the Word… it’s the only way to “connect the head and the heart” (Jeff).

There is SO much more I could say, but for now, I’ll stop here.

Love,

~H~

Little Bits of Life…

I love posting about life… it’s real. It’s simple.

My hubby is home sick today… with a cold I seem to have fought of, except a stuffy nose…I feel bad. I LOVE how marriage is two people sharing life… but not germs!

Fall is here… I’m back to wearing comfy sweaters and scarfs (YES!)…

AND, dun dun dun… making myself lots of yummy pumpkin spice coffee…since my hubby bought me a BIG box from BJ’s (wholesale foods co-op we’re members of)… (and other flavors)… in MY Keurig!

Fall River-20110915-00148

Nice drawer for the K-cups, huh? Saves precious counter space!

Fall River-20110915-00149

He woke up early one morning to set this up for me… it was an adventure as all his surprises are for me… including me almost waking up with him (at 4:30 AM!)…him almost waking me up by opening the box and rustling the plastic… and then my alarm going off when he didn’t think it was set.  But I was SOO surprise and blessed!

Last but NOT least… my mom comes in 10…. TEN… days!   SOOO excited!

A Weekend AWAY–lots of pics!

This weekend we took Monday off… and left Saturday with our church and went up to the White Mountains in New Hampshire.  The original plan was to hike Mount Washington, but with it being such a short weekend, we decided to take it easy and explore a few other sites!

The Mountains are getting closer… and closer…
